Refrigeration Basics
There are alot of different choices in refrigerators.
One of the first questions we ask is "Do you have any space limitations?"
Some kitchens have limited height, width, or depth for where the refrigerator is located.
It is always a good idea to measure as accurately as possible as your choices can change
based upon one inch difference in width or height.
Most refrigerators come 24", 28", or slightly less that 30", 33" or 36" in width.
Height varies from under 60" to over 72", but most homes will be about 64" to 68".
Depth varies as well, but most are about 30" deep without the handles,
unless it's a special shallow depth which tend to be about 26" deep without the handles.
These shallow depth refrigerators tend to be very tall ( about 68 to 72") and very wide, normally just under 36".
Top freezer?, Bottom freezer?, or Side by side?
Mostly it's a matter of personal preference.
Top freezers are the most common.
Top freezers give you easy access to the things you use most often.
Side by sides give easy access to both sections, and often water in ice dispensers.
Smaller side by side refrigerators can be a tight squeeze in both sections, but full size (25 or 26 cubic foot)
usually give you pretty easy access.
Water dispensers have recently been introduced on top freezers and botton freezers, both inside the unit and on the outside.
But ice dispensers tend to be found only in side by sides.
Some refrigerators offer advanced cooling systems and temperature control systems.
Most refrigerators have wheels that allow them to roll in and out easily.
Some refrigerators just have drawers, but some have humitity controlled crispers,
and temperature controlled meat drawers.
Most refrigerators can accept icemaker kits.
Some refrigerators have ice makers and dispensers, with water filters.
Filtering the water can improve the taste of both the water and the ice cubes.
The filters need to be replaced about once a year.
A fairly new trend in refrigerators is to have smooth finished doors
instead of the more typical textured doors.
Most top mount, and bottom mount refrigerators have reversible doors.
Some, such as certain stainless steel models,
have to be ordered in one door swing or the other because of the way the handles are mounted.
Typical colors include white, black, bisque, and stainless steel,
although a variety of new stainless like colors and materials are available.
Cleansteel, Satina, and Silver Metallic are a few of these newer colors.
Most refrigerators come with one full parts and labor warranty on everything.
Others will give slightly longer warrantys, such as 10 year parts on the compressor.
